In
addition to its spiritual benefits, study of the Bhagavad
Gita is a wonderful way to develop proficiency in Sanskrit.
The
Bhagavad Gita is actually a conversation in Sanskrit between
Lord Krishna and Arjuna. The grammar is not overly complex,
so we can follow along with the help of a text.
Chapter
2 is our starting point because it summarizes the contents
of the Bhagavad Gita.
The
purpose of the flashcards is to develop vocabulary, which
will allow us to listen with comprehension to chanting of
the Bhagavad Gita. In this way, we enliven our study of commentary
and deepen our reflections upon this wisdom.
Only
the new words are given for each verse. After we have learned
the individual words, we can file them by verse. Or we can
place them in dictionary order to create a glossary of Chapter
2.
If
you have paper for printing out business cards, this is ideal.
Each page has two columns of five words each. You can print
the words in Sanskrit on the front side, then reverse the
paper and print the English meanings on the back of the paper.
After
you separate the cards at the perforations, you will have
flashcards with Sanskrit devanagari script on the front and
English meanings on the back.
You
might also use cardstock or paper to print the flashcards
and simply cut them yourself with scissors.
These
flashcards are designed to provide an experience of working
with Sanskrit words in Sanskrit devanagari script. They are
for those who are already able to read devanagari script,
such as by completing study with the "Devanagari:
Gateway to Sanskrit" DVD Set or other studies.
